Building project

The new headquarter for TV and radio broadcasting as well as the administration buildings have been erected on the area of the former stockyards and slaughterhouses and were finalised in 2000. It provides office space for the 1200 employees of the company owned jointly by three German states. The construction includes the new high-rise building as well as the rehabilitation and conversion of existing historical buildings.

Building project

The new building consists of a reinforced concrete skeleton structure with mainly flat slabs. The structure is separated above ground into three parts: high rise building with entrance hall, reception, cafeteria and two large studios, then the TV/radio production with small TV studios, broadcasting rooms and back stage facilities and lastly the administration.

The entire building has a common basement without joints, since the maximum ground water level is almost at the surface of the terrain. The common base plate and the exterior walls are made of water impermeable reinforced concrete, the thickness of the plate varies between 1.0 and 2.5 m. During construction, the high rise building and the base building were kept separated to anticipate the settlement of the high rise building. This joint in the basement was closed after finalising the structural works.

The studios are house-in-house construction on elastic springs for acoustics and shock insulation purpose. The antennas on the top of the high rise building are mounted on an extremely stiff steel truss structure in order to meet the requirements for the directional accuracy for the transmission by the parabolic antennas to satellites.
